“Through my work, I try to explore ways of communicating what it feels like to be alive.” Charlotte’s paintings and prints all have figurative starting points. Her personal experiences and the imagery collected from travelling abroad are then gradually abstracted through the process of execution and emotional response. She has been painting and printmaking full time since 1992, when she completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Printmaking at The Slade School of Art. Charlotte concentrates on two printing techniques, screen printing and etching. Through both mediums she has demonstrated a dynamic quality rarely seen in prints. The unique results she achieves in her work is founded in the techniques and materials she employs. She uses acrylic on canvas, building up layers of paint from the opaque to transparent. Using this method, Charlotte can remove elements she is not happy with, without affecting the previous layers. Not unsurprisingly this process takes some time, with each painting taking from six to eight weeks to complete.
