David Farrant trained at Central St Martins, London. He has combined a career teaching at Somerset College of Art with his professional life as an artist. His work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery where he was a finalist in the John Player Award for Portraiture 1989 and with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in the Mall Galleries, London.
David has undertaken over 20 portrait commissions and has work in private collections throughout the United Kingdom, Germany, New Zealand, Australia and United States of America. David Farrant works in either acrylic or oils to a fairly large format so that his pictures have "presence" in the domestic environment. His interest is primarily in the figure - people at work, in the street, at leisure: seen and remembered, which are then re-invented using drawings, colour sketches and photographs.
